Youth Racing Team
From August through May the Youth Racing Team is at its most active. Children ages eight to fifteen are seen setting sail early on Saturday mornings for practice. On Friday afternoons they can be seen loading boats onto large nine-boat trailers to prepare for Regattas. We compete against other sailing teams all over the United States. Every summer we host our Learn-to-Sail camps from June until August. Our course is geared toward fun and learning! We teach the basics of rigging an Optimist pram, basic boat handling, seamanship, sportsmanship, sailing fundamentals and water safety. Instruction is done in Optimists with 2 sailors per boat. We use sturdy beginner prams that safely fit children up to 110 lbs. Each Learn-to-Sail camp begins with swimming and capsizing activities. Doing this acclimates the sailors to the water and their boats. Capsizing and swimming activities take place in the TYCC swimming pool. Sailors must be at least 8 years old by the start of camp.
